David De Gea Leaves Manchester United After Contract Expiry
Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea has left Manchester United after 12 years at the club.
David’s contract expired at midnight on Saturday 1st July 2023 and he has not re-signed.
As per a report from The Athletic this week, De Gea was offered a new contract on reduced wages which was agreed on before the club pulled the contract after talks with manager Erik ten Hag.
The club then offered David a second contract with a further reduction in wages which has not yet been signed.
It is possible that De Gea can still sign the contract and stay a Man United player but it is looking increasingly likely his time in Manchester is up.
Latest reports suggest that a few clubs in Saudi Arabia are interested in his signature as well as his former club Atletico Madrid.
Aside from football, David De Gea is set to get married to his long-time partner Edurne Garcia, the same day he became a free agent.
Edurne is a Spanish singer who represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015.
With his time at Man United, David won one Premier League, one Europa League, one FA Cup, two league cups and three Community Shields.
Individually, David has won two Premier League Golden Gloves, one Premier League Player of the Month, four Manchester United Players’ Player of the Years and four Sir Matt Busby Player of the Years.
He has also been represented in FIFA FIFPro World XI in 2018 and has appeared in five PFA Premier League Team of the Seasons.
Statistically speaking David has recorded the most clean sheets in Man United history with 190 beating both Edwin Van De Sar and Peter Schmeichel.
He has also conceded 590 goals in 545 games for the club.
Andre Onana is looking most likely to replace David De Gea in goal as Erik ten Hag targets a more aggressive approach from his backline.
