Manchester United Officially Sign Mason Mount; Will Wear No. 7

Mason Mount has officially signed for Manchester United for a fee of £55m plus £5m add-ons.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract keeping him at the club til June 2028 with an option to extend a further year.

Man United had two bids rejected for the former Chelsea midfielder before face-to-face talks helped agree the deal.

Mason has made 279 club appearances since breaking through the Chelsea youth setup.

Mount has recorded 58 goals and 53 assists in his career and has won Chelsea’s Player of the Season in both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

The English midfielder has won the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea.

Born in Portsmouth, Mount played for Chelsea and Portsmouth youth academies for one day a week before officially joining The Blues in 2005.

Aged 18, Mason was promoted to the senior team before spending the 2017/18 season on loan at Dutch side Vitesse.

He made an impact for the side including scoring against Erik ten Hag’s Utrecht with his first touch after coming off the bench.

Mount then returned to England to enjoy a loan spell with his idol Frank Lampard at Derby County during the 2018/19 season.

He then played himself into Chelsea’s first team and stayed a central part of the side up until last season.

Mason Mount has spoken about joining the Man United project under Erik ten Hag;

“It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career.

“Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.

“I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”

Manchester United Football Director John Murtough has also spoken on the signing;

“Mason is an extremely intelligent footballer and has so many fantastic technical qualities that will significantly add to our squad.

“We have admired his talents for a long time, so we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next steps in his career here at Old Trafford.

“His style of play and attributes are a perfect fit for this squad, and we all believe that he will only improve further by working with Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff.

“Mason himself is a world-class player but he also has the ability to improve the players around him through his game intelligence and tactical awareness.

“We were particularly impressed by his strong desire to join United, and his thirst for further success, as we push to drive up our performance levels next season and beyond.”

Mount To Wear Number #7

It was later announced by the club that Mason Mount will don the prestigious number #7 shirt at the club.

Rumours suggested that either Jadon Sancho or Alejandro Garnacho would wear the #7.

Bryan Robson was the last midfielder at Manchester United to don the #7, a shirt worn by club legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Eric Cantona.
