Manchester United’s 23-year old goalkeeper Dean Henderson has put pen to paper on a new six year deal contract with the club.

The news was announced by Manchester United on Wednesday and his long term signature should provide competition for David De Gea this season. That’s if he stays at the club this season but going out on loan is still a possibility but is not expected.

Dean Henderson is 7 years younger than David de Gea and this seems like a clear show of faith by the club in a player who has impressed for Sheffield United in the last two seasons helping them gain promotion to the Premier League in the 2018/19 season and impressing in the top flight in the 2019/20 season.

It is understood that Dean Henderson will be paid in the region of £120,000 a week on his new contract and that it keeps him at the club until 2026.

Henderson may stay and contest the number one slot in between sticks for United but perhaps he will be loaned out again this season to gain more experience as De gea is still United’s number one goalkeeper and on a much bigger contract in the region of £300,000 per week.

However De Gea did suffer from an error prone season in the 2019/20 season leaving many calling for him to be dropped in favour of Henderson who impressed all year and was a figure of dependability making only one error all season long for ‘the Blades’ comapared to the 3 in the league for De Gea.

There is even some rumblings that this show of intent by United signing up Dean to a big money long term deal may spell the end for the Spanish shot stopper at the club as United look to cut out the errors throughout the back line.

Henderson has also been named in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad

Henderson when speaking after signing his new contract stated “The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group,” Henderson went on to say.

“The faith that the manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

“I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club. Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead.” said Henderson.

Solskjaer when ask about the new contract of Henderson stated “We are delighted that Dean has signed his new contract, he had another great season at Sheffield United, where he gained a lot of experience and grew both as a player and a person.”

“Dean is a fantastic young ‘keeper with the attitude and work-rate to keep improving every day.”

“We are in a strong position within the goalkeeping department and that gives us the competition for places that we are looking for in the squad.”

It remains to be seen what Solskjaer’s plans are for Man Utd’s goalkeeping position this season With De gea, Henderson and Romero at the club currrently. Who would you like to see be given the number 1 spot in United’s team for the 2020/21 season?
