The 29-year-old has played 93 times for France scoring five goals and winning two major tournaments.

Varane was a major part of France’s 2018 World Cup win as well as helping his side win the 2021 UEFA Nations League.

He also contributed to Les Bleus road to the 2022 World Cup Final in Qatar last December.

Raphael joins fellow Premier League Frenchman Hugo Lloris in retiring from international duty this year.

It was expected that Varane would take over the captain’s armband from the Tottenham goalkeeper before the announcement.

Raphael could add another trophy to his extended cabinet when Man United face Newcastle in the EFL Cup Final at the end of February.
