Manchester United have announced the signing of Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martinez for £57m.

The initial fee is reported as £48.5m with an additonal £8.5m in add ons agreed by both parties.

The club announced the news at 1pm today;

Martinez signs from Erik ten Hag’s former side Ajax and will join the likes of Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire as centre-back options.

The Argentine has signed until June 2027 with the customary option to extend a further year.

Lisandro has recorded 177 career club appearances and is a staple of the defence in the Argentine national side.

Man United are adding a proven winner to their squad with the 24 year-old already winning a Copa America as well as two Eredivisie titles.

Ten Hag outlined his desires for a left-footed centre-back and has even used Alex Telles in that role during pre-season.

Upon the signing, Martinez spoke for the first time since his move to the Red Devils;

“It’s an honour to join this great football club. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment and, now that I’m here, I’m going to push myself even further.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that’s what I want to continue at Manchester United.

“There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that, under this manager and coaches, and together with my new team-mates, we can do it.”

Martinez also paid tribute to his former club in this statement;

“I want to thank Ajax and their fans for all the support they gave me. I had an unbelievable time there but feel the moment is right to test myself in another environment. Now I am at the perfect club to do this.”

Manchester United Football Director John Murtough has also spoke about the club’s third summer signing;

“Lisandro is an outstanding player who will bring further quality and experience to Erik [Ten Hag]’s squad.

“We are delighted that he has chosen to join Manchester United and we are looking forward to seeing him develop further and help the team achieve the success we are aiming for.”

Martinez is the club’s third and most expensive summer signing ahead of both Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.
